Morgan Community College making connection with 9th Grade StudentsThrough a grant from the El Pomar Foundation, Wiggins High School ninth graders now have an opportunity to explore health careers through an elective class “Introduction to Health Science.” The focus of the grant is “growing our own healthcare providers” through early education and mentorship with health professionals. In the first semester, the students meet M-F for 50 minutes per day, alternating between three instructors; the second semester has the students connecting with a mentor to communicate with on a weekly basis and to shadow for a day while continuing to learn entry-level health care skills. The freshmen participating in this program are also the first ninth graders to be involved in HOSA allowing them to compete in health care skills events and other competitions at state conferences.
