**CAP4K 12-Stop Teacher Tour**The Colorado Department of Education in collaboration with the Colorado Education Association (CEA) will hold a 12-stop tour across the state to identify teacher understanding of Senate Bill 08-212, also know as the Colorado Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K). The tour stops will allow for discussion about the law’s relevance to practice, its impact on teaching and learning and the kind of help that teachers would find useful for classroom implementation. The meetings will be led by CAP4K Project Manager, Samantha Long, CDE Deputy Commissioner, Ken Turner and CEA Director of Teaching and Learning, Linda Barker. Feedback from the tour will help CDE organize professional development and other support for teachers related to CAP4K. Additional Tours will be held on the following dates: S.B. 08-212 seeks to establish a seamless pathway from preschool into college or the workplace. Essential to that pathway is an understanding of what it means to be ready for education or the workforce after high school and a plan to ensure that students take the necessary courses and master the content to do so. These descriptions of school readiness and postsecondary and workforce readiness will guide the final selection of new statewide model content standards, which are being revised for the first time since they were adopted 13 years ago.

Expansion of CCCOnlineColorado Community College Online has expanded to a 24/7 online Paralegal Degree and Certificate program. CCCOnline’s program offers the same level of courses as those taught at most paralegal schools except the student can now do the whole program online. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that employment of paralegals is growing much faster than the average, as employers try to reduce costs by hiring paralegals instead of lawyers. The BLS predicts that the profession will grow 22% between 2006-2016. Most paralegals entering the field have an associate’s degree in paralegal studies or a bachelor’s degree coupled with a certificate in paralegal studies. The CCConline Paralegal associates degree is only 30 credits; the certificate is 21 credits. Students can register online at http://www.ccconline.org/courses/programs/Paralegal.
Special Populations Program of the Year WinnerThe Valley High School ACE program in Gilcrest, CO was nominated and selected to receive the Piney Mountain Press Award for Special Populations Program of the Year. Debra Hodson accepted the award at the 2008 National ACTE Convention in Charlotte NC in December. The Valley High School ACE program focuses on job readiness skills via a student run business. The students have spent the last three years running the Valley Perk, a very successful coffee shop at the high school, gaining valuable job skills by the hands on experience. The job training available to students at the Valley Perk includes management, customer service, inventory specialist, marketing and baristas. Due to the success of the coffee shop, the students have also learned the benefit of philanthropy. All of the upper level ACE students are unified partners with the Valley HS Special Olympics Team. This stellar civics program has created a wonderful and meaningful relationship between at-risk students and those students with severe disabilities. A round of applause for Deb Hodson and her ACE students.
