Why the need for a Career & Technical Education (CTE) credential?

Under the State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education (SBCCOE) board rules governing credentialing, all secondary instructors who teach in a Colorado Community College System (CCCS) approved program must hold a valid credential. At the post-secondary level, CRS 23-60-304 indicates postsecondary CTE instructors must hold a valid credential. A credential ensures that the CTE program provides students with well qualified instructors possessing appropriate occupational and educational experience.

Guidance for the credentialing process can be found in the credentialing section of the administrators' handbook.

The credentialing process is credentialing by pathway rather than by a specific program. A pathway is a broad grouping of careers that share similar characteristics and whose employment requirements call for many competencies. Currently in Colorado, there are 81 different pathway credentials identified at both secondary and postsecondary levels. To determine the pathway you need to apply for see the Career & Technical Education program crosswalks.
